Enugu state government appoints Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) as member of advisory council on prerogative of mercy

In recognition of its commitment to justice reform and human rights advocacy, the Enugu State Government has appointed Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) as a member of the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

This appointment underscores CAPIO’s dedication to promoting restorative justice and improving the lives of inmates in custodial centers. As a member of the council, CAPIO will contribute its expertise to advising the government on matters of mercy, particularly in cases deserving clemency or pardon.

CAPIO remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration. We appreciate this opportunity to collaborate with the Enugu State Government in advancing the cause of human rights and creating a more compassionate society.

CAPIO’s Medical Outreach Brings Hope to Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre Support

On July 6,2024 CAPIO organized a significant medical outreach at the Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre, providing essential health services to inmates. A dedicated team of doctors and pharmacists conducted health checks, including blood pressure and sugar level screenings, followed by personalized consultations. This initiative reflects CAPIO’s unwavering commitment to improving inmate well-being. We thank everyone who made this day possible and encourage ongoing support to continue making a difference in the lives of those in need.

CAPIO board of trustees and staffs were Trained on safe guarding

CAPIO is proud to be the first organization in Southeast Nigeria to undergo safeguarding training, facilitated by Resource and Support Hub. The training equips staff with strategies to protect the dignity and safety of everyone we serve. Key topics included understanding safeguarding, practical applications in real-life scenarios, and developing robust policies for a safe working environment. This marks a significant step in CAPIO’s mission to foster a secure and supportive atmosphere for all beneficiaries.

Advancing Justice Reform: Stakeholders Forum on Community Service Sentencing

On July 25, 2024, the Enugu State Ministry of Justice, in partnership with CAPIO and the Enugu State Justice Reform Team, hosted a forum focused on community service sentencing within Enugu’s justice system. The event aimed to engage key stakeholders to implement community service as an alternative to custodial sentences. Discussions highlighted benefits such as offender rehabilitation and custodial decongestion. This forum represents a crucial step toward a more equitable justice system in Enugu State.

CAPIO Highlights Community Service Sentencing on Signature TV

CAPIO’s Executive Director, Rev. Fr. Jude Isiguzo, appeared on Signature TV to discuss the “Operationalization of Community Service Sentencing” as acritical alternative to prison sentences. This initiative aims to reduce prison overcrowding and rehabilitate offenders through meaningful community engagement. The insightful session highlighted how integrating community service into the justice system can lead to more effective outcomes for society.

Capacity Building at CAPIO

Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) emphasizes the importance of continuous learning. From August 19-23 2024, we hosted a week-long training on Proposal Development and Report Writing for our staff, facilitated by consultant Francis Ademola. This training aimed to enhance the skills of both new and existing team members in resource mobilization and grant-winning proposals. Proudly funded by Misean Cara, this initiative supports our on going commitment to organizational development and effective reporting.

NECO Commends CAPIO’s Support for Inmates’ Education

CAPIO was honored with a visit from the NECO Chairman, Professor Dantan iIbrahim Wushishi, who was represented by Mr. Nyam A. Edokor, Enugu State Coordinator of NECO, and his team, including Mr. Arinzechukwu E. Onovo, the Education Desk Officer for Enugu maximum security Correctional Centre. They visited to commend our commitment to sponsoring and supporting inmates’ education. Their recognition motivates us to continue our mission. A big thankyou to NECO Nigeria for their invaluable support and partnership.

CAPIO at INDABA: The Power of NOW-US

CAPIO participated in a week-long event, “INDABA: The Power of Now Us,” held at White Sand Hotel in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Represented by our Executive Director, Rev. Fr. Jude Isiguzo, we joined over 80 participants from ten Voice focus countries. The event celebrated eight years of global projects, reflecting on our shared journey since 2016.Through Voice Funding, CAPIO has implemented three impactful projects in Nigeria focused on advancing human rights for women prisoners, empowering incarcerated women and girls, and enforcing electoral rights for inmates. These initiatives embody the essence of “NOW-US” (Nothing About Us, Without Us)

Enhancing Comfort for Female Inmates at Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Center

Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization(CAPIO) is committed to improving the welfare of inmates. Recently, we donated 16 bunk beds to female inmates at Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre. This initiative aims to enhance their living conditions, promote dignity, and provide essential comfort. Our dedication to transforming lives continues, striving to build a more compassionate society, even within custodial walls.

Closing Ceremony at Onitsha Custodial Centre

On September 24, 2024, CAPIO and female inmate and returned citizens [FIRC] visited Onitsha Custodial Center for the closing ceremony of a 25-day training on making reusable menstrual pads. Key stakeholders, including CAPIO’s Executive Director and the Controller of Corrections, attended. Female inmates showcased their handmade pads, despite equipment challenges, and received certificates and cash prizes. CAPIO pledged financial support for more sewing machines, and the Controller donated three additional machines. The event ended with dance and refreshments, celebrating the empowerment of the inmates through skill development.

Prioritizing Mental Health: Empowering Staff at Enugu Maximum Security Correctional Center

CAPIO recently organized a mental health awareness session for the staff at Enugu State Maximum Security Correctional Center. The focus was on the significance of prioritizing their own mental health to effectively support inmates struggling with drug abuse and mental health challenges. By learning to manage stress and seek help, staff can cultivate a healthier environment for themselves and the inmates under their care.

At the start of a training program for female inmates in Abakaliki Custodial Centre, they learned how to make reusable sanitary pads. This initiative helps equip them with valuable skills for the future.

Empowering Female Inmates: Monitoring and Support at Onitsha Custodial Centre

FIRC and CAPIO conducted a monitoring and evaluation visit to Onitsha Custodial Centre to assess the ongoing training of female inmates in producing reusable sanitary pads. The project team tracked progress, observed the inmates’ enthusiasm, and noted equipment challenges, leading to a request for additional sewing machines. FIRC also donated a water storage tank to address the water accessibility issue for female inmates. The training is progressing well, with 48 out of 65inmates at advanced stages. The visit highlighted the project’s impact and the need for further support.

CAPIO Supports their Legal Staffs Participation at the NBA Conference in Lagos

Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) proudly supported their staff’s attendance at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference held in Lagos. This opportunity allowed CAPIO’s team to engage with legal professionals, broaden their knowledge, and further their commitment to justice reform and advocacy work.

At the funeral of mother of Barrister Nwanneka Okolo CAPIO board of Trustees member

On Friday, September 20th, the CAPIO community joined Barrister Nwanneka Okolo in mourning and paying their respects at the funeral of her beloved mother. The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to a cherished life, bringing together family, friends, and colleagues to offer their condolences and support during this difficult time.

CAPIO Center of Hope: Empowering Lives in Oji River

CAPIO’s Center of Hope in Oji River, Enugu State, is a key project aimed at rehabilitating and empowering marginalized individuals, including former inmates and the less privileged. The center provides vocational training, educational opportunities, and counseling services to help these individuals reintegrate into society with dignity. It also focuses on mental health support, skill acquisition, and offering a second chance for individuals to rebuild their lives, aligning with CAPIO’s mission of justice and restorative care.
