MENTAL HEALTH AND SELF-CARE TRAINING Carmelite
Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) conducted a crucial training session with the staff of the Enugu State Maximum
Security Center, focusing on mental health and self-care.
The session emphasized the importance of staff members prioritizing their mental and
emotional well-being. As frontline caregivers, their ability to manage stress, seek help when needed, and maintain their overall health is critical to effectively supporting
inmates, particularly those battling drug abuse and mental health challenges. By equipping the staff with tools to care for themselves, CAPIO aims to foster a healthier,
more balanced environment within the custodial center—one where both staff and inmates can thrive.
CAPIO remains committed to promoting systemic reform, staff empowerment, and improved conditions within correctional
facilities across Nigeria.

HOW COMMUNITY SERVICE SENTENCES BENEFIT OFFENDERS AND COMMUNITIES
Community service sentences provide offenders with the opportunity to avoid prison, reintegrate into society, learn new skills, and take responsibility for their actions. For communities, these sentences offer practical benefits, such as cleaning and repairs, which improve local well-being. These sentences help reduce prison overcrowding and save government costs by assigning offenders to productive work. Additionally, they promote rehabilitation, reduce re-offending, and strengthen communities through shared contributions. This win-win approach benefits both social good and financial efficiency.

THE POWER OF VOTING FOR INMATES

Voting is a powerful tool for inclusion and change. Granting inmates the right to vote acknowledges their humanity and gives them a voice in shaping policies that affect society. Excluding them creates a gap in representation, while including them promotes rehabilitation and a sense of belonging. When inmates participate in elections, it strengthens democracy by making it more inclusive and reflective of all citizens. A vote, even from behind bars, is a step toward a society that values fairness and equality. Let’s rethink democracy—because every voice matters!

BARRIERS TO VOTING FOR INMATES IN NIGERIA
In Nigeria, inmates face numerous barriers to voting, despite being citizens. Logistically, there are no provisions for setting up polling units within correctional facilities, making it nearly impossible for them to cast their votes. Legally, ambiguity in the electoral framework raises questions about whether inmates are even allowed to vote, creating confusion and limiting their participation. Societal stigma also plays a role—many believe inmates don’t deserve a voice in democracy, further marginalizing this group. These challenges not only exclude inmates but also undermine the principles of an inclusive democracy. It’s time to address these barriers and ensure every citizen’s voice counts
