ACJL SUCCESS STORY
According to the defendant (name withheld) he lost his phone at the venue of an event that he attended sometime in June 2016. While looking for the phone, he was shown a young girl who they alleged picked the phone. The girl was confronted and asked about the phone which she accepted she picked but it was no longer in her custody. He became furious and threatened to deal with her if she does not return his phone.
About a week later, men of the neighbourhood watch came and arrested him on the allegation that he raped the young girl he had earlier accosted for his phone. He refuted this allegation nonetheless he was handed over to the Police at Central Police Station (CPS), Enugu.
The Police Officers at CPS Enugu finally charged him to Court for rape.
His trial commenced at the High Court, Enugu in 2017. At the commencement of trial, he was represented by a lawyer but the lawyer did not continue because his family could not pay him.
The matter was brought to CAPIO’s office by his family and CAPIO’s legal team took over the matter and provided free legal representation for him.
After several adjournments which delayed the trial, the court delivered its judgment on the 9/2/2020 where upon he was released from the Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Center after four years of incarceration.
