CAPIO Donates Laptops Virtual Court Hearing in Enugu State

The Deputy Controller and Officer-in-Charge of Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre J.E. Usifo and his team, paid CAPIO Nigeria a courtesy visit on the 25th of January 2023 where they appreciated CAPIO and expressed their desire to aid judicial processes, involving inmates, through the Virtual Court Hearing. CAPIO had earlier in 2022 offered to provide some materials that would expediate unhindered judicial process for inmates and enable inmates awaiting trial to participate in court sittings from the Custodial Centres. This is to overcome various obstacles in court sittings, curb exposure to risk and to aid speedy trial, especially for inmates who are meant to appear outside Enugu metropolis as insecurity has affected the mobility of Judges and Magistrates outside the metropolis. Judges and Magistrates can preside over cases without physically visiting the court. The visitors expressed willingness and readiness to sign a memorandum of understanding with CAPIO and obtain those items.

Following the visit, on Friday, the 24th of February 2023, CAPIO donated 8 laptops and 4 MTN MiFi in support of the

Virtual Court Hearing.

The donation was supported by Enugu State Justice Reform Team (ESJRT) of which CAPIO is a member. The ESJRT donated some tables and chairs to aid the project.

MOUs were signed between the Officers-in-Charge of Enugu, as well as the Nsukka and Oji- River Custodial Centres, to facilitate the purpose and to ensure effective use of donated items around the state. The donations were well received by the Deputy Controllers who appreciated CAPIO for her continual support to the welfare of inmates and assured the safety, effective and careful use of the items for the purpose for which they were provided.

One laptop, Internet Mifi, a table and 2 chairs items were also donated to Oji-River Medium 

Security Custodial Centre, while Nsukka Medium Security Custodial received two laptops, one MTN Mifi, two tables and 4 chairs as well in furtherance of the mission.

The management and Staff of CAPIO Nigeria appreciates Enugu State Justice Reform Team (ESJRT) and the Officers-in-Charge of the various correctional centres especially the Enugu Custodial Centre Controller J.E. Usifo for their cooperation, and most especially Misean Cara who funded the donated laptops through the ACJL project.
