CAPIO Extends COVID-19 Emergency Response to Anambra and Abia States Command of Nigerian Correctional Service

Following the panic caused by the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to cushion the impact in the Custodial centers, being our primary constituency, CAPIO extended her COVID-19 emergency response to Anambra and Abia States Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service respectively and donated some PPEs.

With funding support from the Irish Embassy in Nigeria, CAPIO embarked on a visit to Awka Custodial Centre on the 2nd of December 2020. The team led by Fr. Ambrose Ekeroku, OCD was warmly received by the In-Charge, Mr. E. Akubueze the Deputy Controller of Corrections, Awka Custodial Center. During his opening remarks, Mr. Akubueze appreciated CAPIO for her forthrightness and kind gestures towards the Correctional Service. This was followed by the sensitization of Correctional Officers and inmates by the In-Charge of Medical, Dr. F. Uzo – Deputy Controller of Corrections, who informed inmates of the need to observe COVID-19 safety measures.

On the 3rd of December, CAPIO team continued her intervention in Abia State, which started with a brief courtesy visit to Mr. J.U. Ezeugwu the Controller, Abia State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service. The team was received by the Controller who appreciated CAPIO for her support to the Nigeria Correctional Service, over the years. With his consent, the PRO, Abia State Command, Mr. Ikpe led the team to Medium Security Custodial Centre, Umuahia.

Upon arriving at the Custodial Center, the In-Charge Mr. Anyaghara received the team in the company of other staff. The Pharmacist in charge of the facility, Mr. Isilebo did a brief sensitization on COVID-19 prevention and urged inmates to adhere strictly to necessary safety measures.

CAPIO donated the following items to the Custodial Centers respectively:
1. 200 liters of Hand Sanitizer
2. Two (2) infrared thermometer
3. 200 liters of Liquid soap
4. Hand gloves – 50 packs
5. Vitamin C – 50 packs
6. Chloroquine – 25 tins
7. Zinc – 25 tins
8. Puritan – 25 tins
9. Drug envelop – 10 rolls.

With this intervention, CAPIO has successfully provided effective COVID-19 intervention to the South Eastern zone and the FCT.
