The Nigeria Police, Enugu State Command has been experiencing a lot of turn around both by way of orientation, practice and training in this era of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Law of Enugu State (ACJL). In order to aid their work and to terminate the regime of torture perpetrated by the police during the making of confessional statement by suspects, CAPIO installed fifty-four (54) wireless closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and fifty-four (54) mini solar power supply system in fifty-four (54) police formations and stations across Enugu State for recording of confessional statements at the police stations.
CAPIO is committed to ensuring that the human rights of suspects at the police station are not only protected but also respected. Therefore, suspects should not be subjected to any form of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment as they are still presumed to be innocent until the contrary is proved.
The ACJL has made it mandatory that if any person who is arrested with or without a warrant, volunteers to make a confessional statement, the making and the taking of the said statement should be recorded on video or other retrievable electronic device and the statement shall be tendered in court during trial. In order to ensure that the police comply with the provisions of the ACJL, CAPIO has supplied all the requisite facilities needed for the full compliance of the law.
This provision is a highly commendable one as we are optimistic that with this development, the police will no longer have reasons to torture suspects before getting confessional statement as any attempt to get it illegally will lead to it be thrown away in court.
