CAPIO KICKSTARTS HER SCHOOL MOBILIZATION CAMPAIGN FOR THE YEAR 2020
The project “Mobilization of Vulnerable Youths against Criminal Activities in Enugu State” funded by Misean Cara is in its 3rd year of execution. The project has two major activities under it, which are: Media campaign and school sensitization outreach. The media campaign will feature on Radio Nigeria Enugu and Dream FM Enugu where the team will discuss contemporary issues on crime, its prevention and empower listeners with life building skills so youths can make the most of their youthful years. The sensitization outreach in secondary schools is aimed at engaging and educating the youths across Enugu State against crime and juvenile delinquencies. To kick-start the project for the year, the team organized a Steering Committee Meeting the 20th of January, 2020. The purpose of this meeting was to ensure the synergy of all the relevant stakeholders such as; the Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Ministry of Education, Post Primary Secondary Management Board (PPSMB), the media and National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in the project. The outcome of the meeting was the effective collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force on the Police Campaign against Cultism and other Vices (POCACOV). The stakeholders pledged their unalloyed support for the project and are excited to partner with CAPIO to implement all activities under the project.
Thereafter, the team met with the Chief Supervisory Principals, Zonal Guidance Counselor Coordinators of the Six Educational Zones (Agwu, Udi, Agbani, Obollo-Afor, Nsukka and Enugu) and representative of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Enugu State on the 30th of January. The fallout of the meeting was the selection of Secondary Schools across the State that would be visited in the year 2020. Participants mapped out more effective and efficient ways to go about the sensitization outreach so that no school is left out. Also, a sustainability plan for the fight against crime amongst youths was developed, which is a way of ensuring the project outlives its timeframe.
The School sensitization program kicked off immediately with visits to pre-selected secondary schools which cuts across the six educational zones in Enugu State, like: Trans-Ekulu Girls Secondary School, Uwani Secondary School, Maryland Secondary School, Solid Base Secondary School, etc. The Team dealt on topics like; Cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, truancy, bullying, rape, low self-esteem etc. These issues are prevalent amongst youths in this region and across the globe and are the major factors that make youths susceptible to crime.
Through this outreach, the team has reached the grassroots with campaigns against crime. A total number of 25 schools were visited where over 30,000 students were advised to abhor violence and crime so as not to jeopardize their future because they are the leaders of tomorrow.
