CAPIO LEADS ADVOCACY FOR THE RELEASE OF PRISONERS ON DEATH ROW
Following in on the recent call for the abolition of the death penalty from the Nigerian justice system, CAPIO, in conjunction with the Irish Ambassador in Nigeria, led advocacy to the Governors of Enugu and Ebonyi States, for the release of prisoners on death row. A previous advocacy visit led by CAPIO and the Irish Ambassador led to the release of ten prisoners on death-row in Enugu Maximum security prison. The released death-row inmates were beneficiaries of the Ex-offenders Rehabilitation project, a project which sought to provide ex-offenders with psychological and medical rehabilitation, including economic empowerment. We are confident that the Governors will release more prisoners on death-row, seeing the giant strides CAPIO has made with ex-prisoners’ rehabilitation. The Irish Ambassador is also very willing to provide CAPIO with the funds for rehabilitating the inmates on their release.
