CAPIO PARTICIPATES IN THE APPRAISAL Q1 ACTIVITIES, WAY FORWARD BETWEEN NGOS AND NIGERIA CORRECTIONAL SERVICE.
The meeting was held at the Hall of Industry in Kuje Custodial Centre. The Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) was represented by Etorobong Inyang (CAPIO Abuja Liaison Officer), while the Association of Female Inmates and Returned Citizens (AFIRC) was represented by Lucy Dangana.
The Controller FCT Command, Abdulrahman Maiyaki, in his welcome remarks aligned with the need for an improvement in the welfare of inmates, which has been the mission of the past and the incoming Controller General of Corrections. The Controller of FCT Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service steered the meeting to focus on the need to relieve tension among inmates, ensure inmates have a sense of belonging, use of returned citizens to model good work of the Custodial Centre, and counselling services to build the morals of inmates.
Meetings between the Nigerian Correctional Services and NGOs is a vital platform to advise NGOs/CSOs of desirable projects/assistance, a strategy for synergy to avoid duplication of projects and cross fertilization of ideas, all for an improved welfare of inmates. The two returned citizens (ex-inmates) were called to address participants on their stay in Custody and the role NGOs played in making their stay bearable. The two returned citizens shared their experience and thanked NGOs for the various support given to them in and out of custody. The inmates in the Kuje, Suleja and Dupa farm Custodial Centre were given an opportunity to address civil societies present at the meeting. Their representative appreciated the Controller and civil society organizations for all the support they have received so far. In his comment, he expressed the thoughts of other inmates, stating that without interventions from civil society groups, the Custodial Centre would be in a terrible state, given the lackadaisical attitude of the Nigerian Government.
Civil society groups present had the opportunity to give a brief background about their organization and make a resolution to continue to support the Correctional Service. For more detail on this activity, click https://bit.ly/3d12N8B
