The judiciary which is the third arm of the government is seen as the last hope of the common man. The judiciary is constitutionally empowered to interpret the law and to uphold law and order in the society. The role of the judiciary as a key component of the criminal justice system cannot be over-emphasized and that is why most innovations or advocacy in the criminal justice sub-sector are targeted towards that arm of government in order to have any meaningful impact. In a bid to ensure the effective and smooth implementation of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Law of Enugu State, 2017, CAPIO installed twenty-five (25) television sets and DVD players in twenty-five court rooms in the High Court of Justice, Enugu State.
The devices provided for the High court are some of the deliverables under the project, “Advocacy for Improved Criminal Justice System in Enugu State”, sponsored by Misean Cara. The devices if effectively used, will tremendously improve criminal justice delivery in the State. This will expedite trial and reduce to barest minimum the incidence of trial within trial which often leads to delayed and protracted trial.
These provided devices which is adjudged to be epoch-making by all stakeholders in the criminal justice sub-sector, is targeted towards ensuring that justice is not only done but is manifestly seen to be done. Furthermore, extra judicial confessional statements will be played in the open court to ascertain the voluntariness or otherwise of confessional statements tendered by investigation police officers (IPOs) during trial.
This is indeed a remarkable achievement and we are delighted that with this recent development, the Enugu State Administration of the Criminal Justice Law 2017, will now be fully implemented without any challenges.
