Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization has for the last six years sponsored inmates at Enugu State maximum security prison for the National Examination Council Examinations (NECO). This year, CAPIO sponsored a total number of 48 inmates for the exam. The successful candidates were selected from the top performing students who sat for the NECO mock examination. CAPIO registered the successful candidates with the National Examination Council and procured writing materials for them. The Public relations officer in Enugu maximum security prison very recently reported that a total number of 129 inmates in their custody were registered to sit for the upcoming NECO examinations. This number was reported to be the highest number of applicants sitting for the NECO exams, since introducing the NECO examination programme in Enugu Prison. Candidates who are successful at the exams can proceed to the National Open University (which admits inmates free of tuition fees) to study courses of their choice. This news is a welcome development, in light of the dire need to reform and rehabilitate prisoners. Education, as we know it is the bedrock of social rehabilitation, and an educated inmate is twice more beneficial to himself and society. We are very pleased with this news, as it shows commitment on the part of prisoners to their rehabilitation. We hope to sponsor more candidates for the NECO exams in the future. If you wish to partner with CAPIO to support the social rehabilitation of inmates, please contact us through our office line or any of our social media channel indicated above.
