CAPIO Supports Borstal Training Institute Enugu
The Principal of Enugu Borstal Training Institution – Mrs. Elizabeth Ezenwanne paid CAPIO a courtesy visit in August 2022. During the visit, she pointed out challenges faced by the institute and soliciting for support in getting the institute operational. She highlighted several
needs in the Institute which ranged from access to water, and signpost, among several others, which has hindered the admission of students in the facility.
The institute which was established in the 1950s is to serve the South-East and South-South, as a reformation centre for underaged offenders. Should the facility be operational, offenders below 18 years will not be remanded in Custodial Centres, rather they will be in the Borstal Training institutions where they will be reformed and taught several skills.
Given the paucity of funds, CAPIO Nigeria was able to pick one of the least needs and donated a signpost to the Borstal Training Institution Enugu for visibility purposes. The donation also gave room for the CAPIO team to take a tour around the institution. It is appalling to observe that the institution
which is not operational is filled with dilapidated structures. CAPIO Nigeria, therefore, calls on the management of the Nigeria Correctional Service to see to it that the Enugu Borstal Training Institution is fully operational.
Well-meaning Nigerians are equally encouraged to support the institution to curb young inmates from being negatively influenced in custodial centres.
