CAPIO TEAM VISITS THE FEMALE SECTION OF THE KATSINA STATE CENTRAL PRISON

The poor treatment and detention conditions of female prisoners in Nigeria was on the minds of CAPIO Team made up of Rev. Fr. Ambrose Ekeroku, Chijioke Ukwuma, Deborah Odoko and Katsina State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission Mr Nura Sadiq during their assessment visit to the female section of the Katsina Central Prison. The Team was surprised as it wasn’t exactly as they envisaged. The female section was entirely separate from the male prison. The female inmates were full of praises for the cordial relationship that exist between them and prison staff. The Deputy Controller of Prison in charge of Katsina Central Prison said that in his 27 years of service in the Nigeria Prison, it was only after the launch of the gender manual that they started receiving supplies of sanitary pads for women in their prison. However, there are still a few challenges hindering full implementation of gender principles.
