Updates

FIRC project focuses on creating access to self-reliance of female inmates in Nigeria through the production of reusable sanitary pads. To attain this, there commenced a training of some female inmates in Enugu and Lagos- training of trainers (ToT) on the production of reusable sanitary pads, started on the 1st of February 2023 in the FIRC workshop in Garki International Market Abuja. The training was led by Lucy Dangana who was earlier trained. Participants in the training wereLoveth Desmond from Lagos and Nkem Otuto from Enugu, they are both expected to step down the training to female inmates in Kirikiri and Enugu Maximum security Custodial Centre respectively.

The training lasted for seventeen (17) days, and the returned citizens were taught on the several required skills on the production of sanitary towels. Health education was also a component of their training given the limited use of the reusable sanitary pads and proper care of the pads to prevent usage that could lead to health hazard if not well taken care of. At the last stage, the participants were shown how to make bags for storing the pads. The bag making was an easier process and after two days the trainees were able to make the bags without any assistance.

The training ended on 17th February, 2023. By then the trainees had produced a total of 151 pads during the training. FIRC and CAPIO Nigeria appreciate Voice Nigeria for funding the project and the management of the Nigerian  Correctional Service for their continued cooperation.
