Inmate Christmas Party
Inmate Christmas Party is an initiative of the Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) and the Enugu State Catholic Diocese, to show love to inmates, give them close to home experience of the Christmas season. Annually the scope of the celebration gets better through support from well meaning citizens and organizations. The 2022 Inmate Christmas Party was successfully executed through support from the Enugu State Catholic Diocese, Umu Igbo Unite and the Royal Orchard School Enugu, among others.
It has become a tradition for Students of Royal Orchard School Enugu; to annually donate food and household items to CAPIO towards putting a smile on the face of inmates towards the Inmate Christmas Party. On Tuesday, 13th December 2022, students of Royal Orchard School visited CAPIO with their gift items for inmates, the visit was also an avenue for the management of CAPIO to enlighten students on living conditions in the Custodial Centres, and encourage students to live a crime-free life.
The Umu Igbo Unite is an indigenous group of Igbo’s in diaspora. Umu Igbo Unite supported the Christmas Party with bags of rice which was cooked and served in addition to food provided by the Enugu State Catholic Diocese in a bid to ensure that inmates have a swell Christmas Party, while CAPIO provided drinks. Through the above collaboration, over 2,000 inmates in custody and Correctional Officers on duty were received food items.
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu State organize the Christmas Mass. After Mass, the Enugu State Catholic Bishop, Most Rev. Callistus V.Onaga on his tour around facilities in Enugu State Maximum Security Custodial Centre, promised to provide a 100 bed hostel for female inmates.
Food items were delivered to Nsukka Custodial Centre and Oji River Medium security Custodial Centres for Christmas celebration with Inmates.
