JULY 2020 JAIL DELIVERY REPORT
Keeping faith to her words to visit Custodial Centers for jail delivery at least twice a year, the Chief Judge of Enugu State visited custodial centers in Enugu State to grant reliefs to deserving inmates on the 1st and 3rd July 2020. As empowered by law, the Chief Judge of Enugu State embarked on a jail delivery exercise to two major custodial centers in Enugu State to grant some reliefs to inmates who have suffered some kind of injustice by way of delayed trials. The first exercise for 2020 commenced on 1st July and ended on 3rd July 2020. During this exercise, the Chief Judge visited only the Enugu and Nsukka Custodial Centers on 1st and 3rdJuly 2020. Oji River Custodial Center was not visited because no inmate met the requirements for the Exercise.
CAPIO legal team, led by the Executive Director represented about thirty-six inmates. Out of the 36inmates CAPIO represented, four inmates were discharged while fourteen were granted bail and nineteen cases were adjourned to the regular courts. A total of eighteen inmates got reliefs through CAPIO’s intervention. Some of these inmates were directly released to CAPIO to provide other forms of assistance and rehabilitation. There were other Not-for-Profit organizations and pro bono lawyers who provided legal services to inmates during the Exercise which lead to more inmates getting reliefs from the Chief judge.
Below is the total number of inmates that got relief from the July 2020 Jail Delivery Exercise:
Discharged: twenty-two (22)
Bail: forty-four (44)
Total: sixty-six (66)
Discharged: two (2)
Bail: nine (9)
Total: eleven (11)
Number of inmates granted bail were fifty-three (53).
Number of inmates discharged were twenty-four (24)
Total number of inmates that got reliefs from the exercise were seventy-seven (77)
