Updates

Pollrite23 is a project by the Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) to enforce the rights of inmates to participate in electoral processes in Nigeria. With the developed electoral framework for inmates, CAPIO Nigeria organized a one-day dialogue with right- holders (inmates) which took place in the Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre on the 15th of March 2023, with the aim of sensitizing inmates on the provisions of the developed electoral framework for inmates voting in Nigeria. The guideline was developed with support from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ministry of Justice, National Orientation Agency and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

A total of 25 inmates participated, including Mr. Usifo Joseph (the Deputy Controller of Enugu Maximum Security Custodial Centre), and other officers. The dialogue allowed inmates to provide inputs on the subject through focus group discussions aimed at improving the framework. The inmates were sensitized about their rights to participate in electoral processes and were given opportunity to air their views, perceived obstacles and possible solutions to identified challenges.

The inmates and the Correctional officers appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the project. The staff and management of the Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO) also appreciate stakeholders who support the project, most especially, VOICE Nigeria for funding the Pollrite23 project.
