SAFE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION IN KADUNA STATE
CAPIO in Partnership with Avocats San Frontiers (Lawyers without Borders) and Nigeria Bar Association is executing a project “Strengthening the National Actors’ Capacities and Advocating for Ending Severe Human Rights Violations in Nigeria” (SAFE). This project, a direct response to the issues of Human Right abuses by security agencies is being implemented in 3 (three) states: Enugu, Kaduna and Lagos with support of the European Union and ECOWAS.
The Kaduna SAFE Mission involved 4 (four) activities. It saw trainings, advocacy visits and roundtable discussion.
26th -27th November: The Team organized a capacity building training for sixty (60) members of Human Rights Civil Society Organizations and Media practitioners on how to use non – judicial mechanism, case documentation, advocacy communication and legal monitoring. The training was facilitated by Angela Uwandu and Chijioke Ukwuma.
28th -29th November: The Team paid courtesy visit to Heads of Criminal Justice parastatals in Kaduna and other stakeholders like the National Human Right Commission Coordinator, Legal and Counsel, NBA Chairman. The idea behind the visits was to get the buy-in of these stakeholders to ensure that cases of human right violations are reduced.
2nd-4th December: A 3-day workshop was organized for policing agencies (Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Commission, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Customs and Nigeria Army). This workshop was to expose these agencies to extant laws like the Anti-torture Act, Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Minnesota Protocol, Human Right Principles; Torture, Arbitrary Killing/detention.
5th December: The Kaduna SAFE Mission ended with a roundtable discussion that had all participants from the 3 activities mentioned above.
